Survey Says…our school program gets an A+!

Ever wondered how many living plants make up YVR’s Green Wall or what type of vehicles are allowed to drive on the airfield? For the past five years, Grade 5 students from across the Lower Mainland have learned these answers and more when they participate in YVR’s School Tour Program. From YVR's First Nations art collection and environmental programs to security procedures and how to fold a paper airplane that will fly the distance in only a few steps, participating students get an immersive YVR education in just half a day.

This year, we decided to survey the participating classes to find out where we were flying high and where we can improve our take-off. We received some invaluable feedback, and -  we don’t mean to brag - some great survey results. In fact, more than 93 per cent of teachers surveyed said they would recommend the tour at YVR to other schools and colleagues.
Our two excellent guides Jake and Anna are integral to the success of the tours. Some of the comments from the survey about our guides included:
“Both of the tour guides were amazing! They kept the students engaged at all times, which made managing the class very easy for us.” 
“Having excellent guides with ability to control, excite and engage a class is important."
“The tour was so good that you would have thought [the guide] had twenty years’ teaching experience.”
We learned that a mix of education and fun is an important balance for a successful tour. For example, learning about our art collection was interesting, while folding and flying paper airplanes ranked as a favourite activity. We also received feedback that students would like to know more about sustainability and also meet some of our employees. This will help us when we look at shaping our tour for next year - when we'll be aiming for 100 per cent recommendation!
