A Summer in the Life of a YVR Community Ambassador

Hello YVR Connectors! Jake here reporting on the super mega fun YVR Summer Festival Tour coming to an end. Over the last three months I have been travelling to festivals all around the Lower Mainland to talk about our airport and some of its key contributions to the region. Here are the top 5 highlights from my summer adventures!

5. The Venues

Living in BC for most of my life I have become quite accustomed to the beauty around us that I tend to take it for granted. Here I am taking in the beautiful views at Terra Nova Rural Park fully convinced that we do in fact have the best back yard in the world! We also got to set up shop in English Bay for Celebration of Light, Steveston for the Salmon Festival and our own beautiful Burkeville for Burkeville Daze. Some truly amazing locations for these special summer festivals.

4. The Food

Being a Community Ambassador meant a lot of early mornings to set up our big blue tent. Thankfully all of the festivals had tons of amazing food to keep me energized. The Garlic Festival in Richmond offered up interesting garlic ice cream, The Steveston Salmon Festival always has a variety of culinary delights and of course the many various vendors present at all the venues served up scores of tasty treats for the public. These juicy watermelons on the left were lined up for an eating contest at Burkeville Daze.

3. The Activities

After eating my fair share of hot dogs and hamburgers I needed to find a way to burn off some of those excess calories. Each festival provided unique games and activities to get that blood pumping. There was some spirited street hockey at the Spirit of the Sea Festival in White Rock, some spike-hammering at Golden Spike Days and all sorts of fun stuff at Salmon Fest. Unfortunately this extremely tall soccer player “took me to school” at EPICFest. I will get you next time!

2. The Music

No festival would be complete without some tunes that just make you want to dance. The YVR Community Stage was front and centre at the Richmond Maritime Festival featuring performances from The Nautical Miles, The Wild Moccasin Dancers, Ruby’s Uke’s, Roku Shichi Taiko, and the Steveston Folk Mob. Excuse the picture being a little blurry-- that’s how you know we were rocking hard to Mother Mother right by the YVR observation Deck at the Celebration of Light.

1. The People

The highlight of the summer for me was definitely all of the amazing people I met. I had a blast hearing about your travel adventures through YVR, answering all your interesting airport questions and doing my best Alex Trebek impression as I conducted our YVR Fun Facts Quiz! A big “THANK YOU” to everyone who came to say hi. You made this summer one that will not soon be forgotten!
