China Eastern Doubles Up Daily Flights

Business class on board China EasternTravellers on either side of the Pacific will have their pick of more flights when China Eastern Airlines launches its second daily flight between Vancouver and Shanghai on July 20, 2013.

Using Airbus 330-200 aircraft with room for up to 230 passengers, flights operate daily:

• MU581 arrives at YVR at 9:10a.m.; MU582 departs at 1:20 p.m.
• MU597 arrives at YVR at 7:40 p.m.; MU598 departs at 1:30 a.m.

China Eastern’s 14 weekly flights are expected to connect up to 204,000 travellers between Vancouver and Shanghai in 2013 alone. The service increase also bring the tally of weekly flights connecting YVR to mainland China and Hong Kong to a grand total of 75 – more than any other airport in North America.

As the Airport Authority continues to build a gateway airport that will make it fast and easy for all passengers to travel through YVR, China Eastern has also updated its service, by investing in new aircraft on the YVR-PVG route, offering more onboard services and even redesigning cabin crew uniforms.

Every additional long-haul flight operating out of YVR gives a substantial boost to the local economy. China Eastern’s additional flights will generate the equivalent of more than 470 full-time jobs, both at YVR and in B.C.’s hotels, restaurants, shops and tourist attractions.  Together, this activity will generate more than $17 million in wages, almost $10 million in taxes and almost $28 million in added Gross Domestic Product for B.C.  These flights will also make it easier for B.C. businesses to reach new customers, suppliers and investors in China.

Based in Shanghai, China Eastern Airlines is one of the three largest airlines in China, carrying approximately 80 million customers on more than 400 planes with an average fleet age of less than seven years.  In 2012, China Eastern Airlines was named Most Improved Airline by Skytrax World Airline Awards. The airline first began operations to and from YVR in June 2004.

    MU 5030 was to depart Bali (DPS) at 3:40 AM on July 22 and arrive Shanghai (PVG) at 9:45 AM.  Without notifying anyone, the flight departed at 7:10 AM, causing about 20 travelers to miss their connecting flights.  Fortunately, I loaded checkmytrip.com two days before departure and figured out that I would miss my connecting flight at 1:00 PM on the July 22.  I say fortunately because most of the departing passengers from Bali arrived at 1:00 AM to find out that that they would have to hang around the airport until 6:30 AM whereas I got lucky and checked the flights two days before departure.  Apparently, China Eastern Airlines bussed many of these travelers to a hotel and got them rooms for the 2 or 3 hour wait.


    MU5030 left Bali at about 7:00 AM and arrived at 1:15 PM in Shanghai, July 22nd.  I missed my scheduled flight to Los Angeles MU 583 as it departed at 1:00 PM. About twenty perturbed travelers that missed their connecting flights all stood around for nearly an hour and a half waiting for a van ride to a three star hotel to stay overnight in Shanghai.  The hotel was adequate,  the food, paid for by CEA at the hotel was marginal.  Also, single travelers had to share a room with a stranger, or pay 120 Yuan (about $20) for a single supliment.  The stranded travelers destinations included San Francisco, New York, Paris, Los Angeles and Vancouver.  My next days flight on the 23 of July went smoothly, departed Shanghai at 1:00PM and landed in Los Angeles at 10:30.  


    The question is, how soon did CEA know that this flight connection was not going to work?  I was told that the Indonesian government would not open DPS until 6:00 AM.  Very frustrating and a bunch of unhappy travelers.  Is this an ongoing occurrence?


    This business class flight to Bali and back to LA was about $4200.  The next least expensive was about $1000 more.  You get what you pay for.
