This morning marked an important milestone in YVR’s ongoing plans to become a premier global gateway, as we welcomed the inaugural China Southern Airlines flight to Vancouver from Guangzhou.
There are many different reasons to celebrate the inaugural flight, but we picked our top three:
- The arrival marks Canada’s first and only nonstop flight to Guangdong, China’s most populous province and a key hub for foreign trade.
- The new airline partner at YVR generates considerable economic spinoff, including the creation of 44 person-years of employment and $2.2 million in wages, and the contribution of $3.5 million to British Columbia’s gross domestic product annually.
- China Southern’s new service offers increased options for passengers and greater opportunities for business and tourism – particularly given Canada’s recent Approved Destination Status from China.
In honour of the exciting occasion, we welcomed the China Southern 777-200 aircraft with an outdoor water arch courtesy of our ERS team, and its passengers and crew with a colourful in-terminal lion dance.
China Southern Airlines’ YVR service will use Boeing 777-200 aircraft, with capacity for 282 passengers. Flights will operate three times per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, arriving at YVR at 10:20 a.m. and departing nonstop to Guangzhou at 12 noon.
