Environmental Management Plan

As a world class and sustainable airport, the Vancouver Airport Authority’s objective is to build, operate and maintain a safe, secure and environmentally sustainable airport for our employees and customers. Our Environmental Management Plan sets out our priorities and our Annual Sustainability Report identifies what we’ve accomplished. We also adopted a Safety, Security and Environment Policy that brings together our core objectives: excellence in safety, security and environment.

Our Strategic Priorities & Targets

The Environmental Management Plan sets out our framework and strategies to manage our environmental footprint by highlighting four strategic priorities each with an ambitious target:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 33% from 2012 levels by 2020
  • Reduce waste to landfill by 50% from 2012 levels by 2020
  • Reduce potable water consumption by 30% from 2012 levels by 2020
  • Meet or beat provincial and federal air and water quality standards to improve ecosystem health

How will we meet these priorities and targets? Through innovative activities that set YVR apart as a leader in sustainability. Here is just some of what we’re doing so far:
  • Investing in alternative energy technologies such as solar hot water, solar photovoltaic, wind power, and geothermal
  • Improving our fleet management to fuel efficient and low emission vehicles
  • Replacing all garbage cans in the terminal with combined waste and recycle containers
  • Promoting sustainable transportation options such as cycling, carpooling and electric vehicle charging
  • Supporting tenants to recycle all compostable waste, such as food scraps and soiled paper products
  • Engaging with Sea Island businesses to adopt best practices and strategies to reduce greenhouse emissions, waste and water consumption
