Biometric identity verification allows you to keep your passport in your pocket. Simply glance at the facial recognition camera on your way through the eGate to verify your identity and board your flight—no physical identification or boarding pass required.

YVR was the first airport in Canada to launch biometric boarding for select flights across Canada through Air Canada’s Digital ID program and some flights to the U.S. via U.S. Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) Traveller Verification Service (TVS) facial comparison technology.

This technology is currently available to passengers on select Air Canada flights who sign up for Air Canada’s Digital ID program (ACDI), and to all U.S.-bound passengers on eligible flights.

The system compares a live photo taken at the gate with images already associated with a passenger’s travel documents, allowing identity to be confirmed in seconds. For members of Air Canada’s Digital ID Program (ACDI), this image will be associated with the digital profile they create. For passengers travelling to the United States, this image is captured by USCBP as part of the customs pre-clearance process.

To sign up for ACDI, download the Air Canada app on your smartphone and create a profile to sign up. Visit Air Canada’s website for step-by-step instructions and details. All U.S.-bound passengers who have cleared customs are automatically eligible to verify their identity with TVS.

Biometric boarding is currently available on select Air Canada flights across Canada and to the U.S. from YVR. Additional airlines will offer the service beginning later this year.

Every biometric program operating at the airport is designed to be optional, with clear alternatives available to those who prefer traditional processes. For select departures to the U.S. via USCBP’s TVS system, individuals who prefer not to use biometric boarding can proceed to a gate agent for manual processing. Air Canada’s Digital ID is an optional opt-in program. Passengers who do not opt in to the program will verify their identity with an agent at the gate using government issued I.D.
